About

Mission:

The Washington Energy and Defense Alliance is a non-profit alliance, which aims to support a local network of individuals, firms, universities and coalitions which are actively involved in energy production, alternative energy development and national security and defense. Washington EDA seeks to recognize the intersection of national security and energy independence issues and to bring visibility to the unique solutions that exist in Washington State. The ultimate goal of the Washington EDA is to nurture and expand Washington's science, technology and job base and further promote Washington State's industry participation in delivering energy and defense solutions to the national market.

Approach:

The Washington EDA includes three important elements:
   (1) a Roundtable that will meet periodically and at a minimum of annually to discuss and formulate collective strategies for industry and government to promote energy and defense jobs in the state; and
   (2) a Website that aims to be a total resource for ongoing development of the Roundtable and its agenda, with important news, and trends about relevant research and jobs in the State, and that provides a bridge to useful tools, consulting firms and professional organizations; and
   (3) regular Symposia on topics in science, technology and industry which are relevant to the energy and defense sectors. In particular, the Washington EDA will seek out participants from across the United States to participate in these symposia and to bring visibility to the unique contributions that the individuals, firms, universities and consortia of Washington State bring to bear on national issues in energy and defense.

Membership:

Participation in the Washington EDA is actively sought among firms, groups and individuals who have an interest in seeing the State's energy and defense contributions grow, including large and small firms, our elected officials, and professional services and trade organizations.
The initial focus of the Alliance's membership recruiting efforts will be on small businesses, and the early Roundtable and symposia will focus on issues specific to this demographic.
The Alliance anticipates a small membership fee for active participants (to be determined at first Roundtable meeting) and will seek sponsorship to fund regular symposia.

Success Metrics:

The Washington EDA anticipates tracking the following metrics to determine the Organization's success in meeting its stated goals and objectives:
   • Number of Department of Defense and Department of Energy contracts awarded to Washington State member companies
   • Dollar value of Department of Defense and Department of Energy contracts awarded to Washington State member companies
   • Number of energy jobs created among member companies (per annual poll of members)
   • Number of defense jobs created among member companies (per annual poll of members)

Washington EDA anticipates collaborating with existing technical alliances within the region.

These include:
   • Washington Technology Industry Association
